In this site-specific work, boats from around the world and of all sizes figuratively sail across the space. Made of black metal hulls and white plasticized cotton, they seem as if they are pencil-drawn. They hang from the ceiling floating upwards as if departing from the bottom of the sea to create a sky of clouds. Chiharu Shiota explains, ‘The boats may be seen from different angles, thus becoming invisible or visible, hollow or full, light or opaque. Floating upwards they share a common course to an unknown destination. The white color symbolizes purity and calm but also evokes blankness, the void. I see this piece as a metaphor: we cling to the idea of destiny to accept uncertainty; we ride the sea of time in search of a destination. Boats are the bearers of dreams and hope.’

‘Native Home,’ 2019, continues Toby Albert’s series of large-scale word-images that use text as a provocative device to examine the historical representation of Aboriginal people and culture. Drawing upon personal and collective histories that tell a story of the legacies of colonialism, Albert questions how we understand, imagine and construct difference. Certain political themes and visual motifs resurface across his oeuvre, including thematic representations of the ‘outsider’ and ‘Aboriginalia,’ a term the artist coined to describe kitschy objects and images - ashtrays, teal towels, cross-stitch and other domestic and tourist artifacts that feature naive portrayals of Aboriginality. Albert’s technique and imagery are distinctly contemporary, displacing traditional Australian Aboriginal aesthetics with a kind of urban conceptuality.

For the 2019 edition of Art Basel: Miami Beach, Garth Greenan Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of signature works by five gallery artists—Peter Blake, Melissa Cody, Allan D’Arcangelo, Rosalyn Drexler, and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith. While all artists in this presentation are unified in their bold use of color, each mobilizes that color to different ends: from Rosalyn Drexler’s transformation of found imagery through dramatic overpainting to Jaune Quick-to-See Smith’s critique of racialized cultural discourse through her symbolic use of red pigments. Additionally, in the Meridians section of Art Basel: Miami Beach, Garth Greenan Gallery is pleased to present Alexis Smith’s monumental wall painting, Fool’s Gold (1982). This presentation marks the first time the work has been shown since the artist’s major 1991 survey at the Whitney Museum of American Art.
