Tang Contemporary Art at Frieze New York 2019

For the 2019 edition of Frieze New York, Tang Contemporary Art brings works by established and emerging Chinese artists, including Zhu Jinshi, Zheng Guogu, Yangjiang Group, Wu Wei, Cai Lei and Zhao Zhao. (Stand B21)

Wu Wei’s works are full of sensual desires, involving topics of civilization, barbarism, and mythology, looking for new feelings and possibilities in materials and space. "Fur" series is a continuation of his previous works where the artist simulated the fur by tailoring the paper, and used this method to create the "smooth space" and "striped space".

All along Zhao Zhao was making work with a subversive appeal of its own, keens on raising challenges on the reality and its traditional practice of art form through various art media. Zhao Zhao is known for making sculptures, paintings, and installations which examine the power of individual free will and the dynamics of state control. Zhao Zhao’s works attest to and touch on the awareness of a generation faced with a dramatic change. Constantly confronted with the subject of world oppression.

Zheng Guogu is a central figure among the generation of Chinese artists who came of age after the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), many of whom have grappled with tensions between tradition and modernity in a rapidly globalizing China. Since the early 1990s - a moment of economic and cultural upheaval - Zheng has critically considered the impact of western culture and digital technologies on contemporary Chinese life. Based in his native Yangjiang, on the country’s southern coast, he often combines aspects of Chinese tradition and consumer culture in works that treat each with a mix of respect and irreverence.

Zheng Guogu’s solo exhibition titled “Visionary Transformation” is currently on view at MoMA PS1. On view through June 23.
