James Biederman

“Gingerly perched on the wall, these wall sculptures twist and turn unto themselves. The organic forms are found without a fixed plan. The curves envelop the interior of splayed and contained space, revealing the mechanics of the intuitive. Layering, bleeding, absorbing, demarcating, defining, altering and luring, color lives within the sculpture. The structure holds the color, the color holds the structure, they speak sculpture.” - Artist Statement

James Biederman is a recipient of a Guggenheim Foundation Grant, Joan Mitchell Foundation Grant, Esther and Adolph Gottlieb Grant, Pollock- Krasner Grant (2), Rauschenberg Foundation Grant, NYFA Grant and two NEA Grants. Biederman’s monochromatic wall sculptures were included in Documenta 7, Kassel, Germany in 1982. He studied sculpture at SUNY New Paltz, Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and Yale University.
