Biography

I am interested in creating visual states that alternate between spatial dimensions and blur the boundaries between illusion and reality. I am deeply invested in the notions of duality and how they can be explored and understood through spatial and perceptual narratives. The complexities of my work lie in the constant state of spatial flux and the disruption of visual logic. Both paintings and installations function at varying vantage points and the changes and shifts in dimensions appear to occur in relation to the viewer.

I build up multiple layers of a pumice-acrylic mixture to construct the surface of my recent paintings. The rough grainy texture adds both an industrial, man-made, architectural element as well as a raw, unprocessed unfinished aspect compared to the previously crisp, clean, graphic esthetics of my earlier works. The highly textured surfaces are layers upon layers of a pumice acrylic mixture applied on canvas with a palette knife. Various dimensions come into play as three-dimensional forms are built outward from its flat ground. The accretions of these layers form a rough edge, plane, form, and dimension. Certain areas of the paintings are built up layer by layer into a relief using a pumice acrylic mixture. The pumice granules in the acrylic paint leave a rough edge on each layer and when these rough edges accrue, they appear as part of a structural facade that appears to have broken off or dug away. Although the paintings are created through an additive process, they culminate into forming cavities of space that appear to have been partially excavated or removed.
