Joan Lebold Cohen

Joan Lebold Cohen was born in 1932 in Highland Park, Illinois. Her main medium of photography has taken her all over the world, but she has retained a specific focus on the Chinese landscape. Her lifelong study of Asian art and culture began informally at the University of California, Berkeley after her graduation from Smith College’s undergraduate program, which she further pursued at Harvard University. Her photographs capture the beauty and mysticism of the Chinese landscape by focusing on natural elements, portraying them in a uniquely provocative way. She has authored multiple books including China Today and Her Ancient Treasures with her husband Jerome Alan Cohen (1974), and created the television program “Images” on WGBH-TV Boston.
