Biography

King Rhomberg was born in Hong Kong to a Hong Kongese mother and Austrian father. The artist was surrounded by art throughout his childhood, his father an avid art collector and patron to the art communities in Shanghai and Hong Kong, keenly supported his arts education. Growing up, King Rhomberg found his passion for art through spray painting graffiti on the streets of Hong Kong. Looking to develop his skills as an artist, the artist took a position as intern with Macau-based Russian artist, Konstantin Bessmertny. Furthering his studies for the fine arts at Die Angewandte (University of Applied Arts Vienna) under the mentorship of his professor, Monika Gryzmala, Johanna Kandl, Emi Rendl Denk and Henning Bohl. During his stay he developed a strong base in painting, ceramics, woodworks and printmaking in the forms of etching, lithography and screen-printing.

When it comes to creating, Rhomberg’s art is all about beginning from scratch and keeping an open mind during the process of building. It is a process that constantly recognizes and appreciates change and fluidity.

Often experimenting with different materials in his work, Rhomberg relates his process to play, being aware of his surroundings and resourceful with the materials available. Just like in a state of play, the trial and error process is never ending until he reaches a moment of enlightenment. It is a balance between creating and over creating – knowing the fine line of when the process must come to an end. It is a dance of both unleashing an idea, and at the same time restraining it.

On recently returning to Hong Kong, he took over the former professional studio of the Hong Kong based artist Simon Birch. Currently he is working toward his first solo exhibition and continuing his studies.
