Carl Andre

Carl Andre is an American minimalist known for his sculptures made from industrial materials often in a linear or grid-like pattern. Andre came to prominence in the 1960’s as a pioneer of the Minimalist movement, creating sculptures which emphasize space using raw, factory-made materials.

Andre has been the subject of retrospectives at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (1970); the Laguna Gloria Art Museum, Austin, Texas (1978); the Stedelijk Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven (1987); the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, England (1996); the Musée Cantini, Marseilles (1997); the Open Air Museum Middelheim, Antwerp (2001); and Kunsthalle Basel (2005).
