FALSE SPACES

TOKAS Project vol. 2 FALSE SPACES
A joint exhibition with Hong Kong Arts Centre

Ever since it first opened in 2001, Tokyo Arts and Space (TOKAS) has continued to collaborate with international artists, curators, arts centers, and cultural organizations to produce exhibitions and pioneer related programs. TOKAS Project began in 2018 as a program aiming to shine a contemplative light on the arts, society, and various other themes from a multicultural perspective.

TOKAS Project Vol. 2, the project will feature collaboration with Hong Kong-based independent curator IP Yuk-Yiu and the Hong Kong Arts Centre to introduce media art from both Japan and Hong Kong via FALSE SPACES, an exhibition that explores our perception of spaces.

As two of the most densely populated urban centers in Asia, Tokyo and Hong Kong share some of the same practical issues. An increase in high-rise buildings due to the concentration of populations in urban areas and a shrinking of living spaces both point to the limitations of physical spaces. On the other hand, these limits have also illuminated our adaptability as humans and the possibilities of conceptual spaces such as personal space and cyberspace, including networks and virtual spaces. This exhibition introduces the work of six artists from Japan and Hong Kong who employ a range of techniques to create unique spaces in a pursuit to express their own world views via art in the real world.

In addition to this initial exhibition, a subsequent exhibition is planned to follow the Hong Kong Arts Centre symposium in February 2020. This series of initiatives aims to spark new developments by enlivening and deepening future exchange between artists in Japan and Hong Kong.
