TRAPS!

In the first scene of a Steven Spielberg movie (pick one), lightning strikes outside and a small world becomes smaller: the air is literally electric and everyone within earshot of the resulting thunder understands their own smallness. This trope cracks into Stephen King adaptations, Tales From the Crypt, nouveau witch movies, teen fantasy thrillers, and revenge comedies, creating a strange blue thread through a certain era of cinema. In another world, tropes become tangible, clichés fetishized, and familiar textures curtains to cross under. Our hero is wrapped up in her own memories of tantalizing disasters. Patterns created to trick and ensnare become mnemonic devices, leading her, like an epiphany, to another alcove of the mind, a lightning bolt tracing the edges of otherwise disparate scenes. —Natasha Stagg
